Well CNN spent quite a bit of time today covering the suspicious packages in Boston. Then they learned it was a hoax which had CNN anchors Kyra Phillips and Mike Brooks calling for stiff consequences for those responsible. Little did they know they were hitting sooo close to home...
PHILLIPS:As Mike was saying, obviously, definitely a sick joke in light of 9/11 what, we saw happen there. And then you see this type of scare hit a city. Of course, the media covering it and all the response.
I mean, this costs a lot of money, when you have all the various entities of law enforcement and also the Homeland Security Department getting involved, that's a tremendous cost to the taxpayer.
Later on...
PHILLIPS: Sick joke as our law enforcement analyst says. And it will be interesting to see what happens to those that are going to be held responsible. We're going to take a quick break. We'll be right back.
And Later...
PHILLIPS: All right. We're getting more information out of that developing story out of Boston, Massachusetts. You know, we took a real serious spin on this story, thinking that it might be a threat to the city of Boston, Massachusetts, when a number of devices were found throughout the city.
Now according to our correspondents talking with their sources in the FBI and also the Department of Homeland Security, it looks like that this is a hoax. It looks like this could possibly just be a publicity stunt for a cartoon and an animated series.
Later still....
BROOKS: Well, Don and Kyra, again, we always say that when something like this happens, you know, it's tough to put the genie back in the bottle. But law enforcement officials are thinking that this is a sick hoax. And that there is no threat to Boston or any other city right now. And they're going to try to find out who was responsible for this.
And I guarantee you, it's not a matter of if, but a matter of when they find out who's responsible for this. Those people will be looking at possible serious jail time, because these kind of things are costly. They could be very dangerous. And you know, you're putting professionals' lives at risk, even when you're doing a sick hoax such as this.
PHILLIPS: I'll tell you, whoever is behind it, they're not going to be laughing when law enforcement get their hands on them, Mike Brooks. (emphasis mine)
So who was behind it? CNN's parent company Turner Broadcasting......
Turner Broadcasting, parent company of Cartoon Network, said the devices, which consisted of magnetic, blinking lights, were part of a promotion for the TV show "Aqua Teen Hunger Force."
"The packages in question are magnetic lights that pose no danger," Turner said in a statement. It said the devices have been in place for two to three weeks in 10 cities: Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, Portland, Ore., Austin, Texas, San Francisco and Philadelphia.
"We regret that they were mistakenly thought to pose any danger," the company said.

"One of the devices was detonated".... I mean.... jeebus. My Mag-Lite has parts in common with an IED. This isn't a sick hoax. It's a massive overreaction to small lit billboards that were place there weeks ago (without permission).
But - In our defense, if you've ever driven in Boston, you know how seriously we take being given 'the finger'.

I have a serious problem with calling this a hoax. It was a marketing campaing. A little weird unorthodox, sure. But it's advertising. Like we've never seen that before.
I have an even bigger problem with arresting those "responsible" - the artist...I mean, come on. Asshats.
And finally, I have a huge fucking issue with the fact that no one seems to be openly laughing at Boston for overreacting and being such bags o' douche. Okay, I get it. Post-9/11 world. Bomb threats are scary. But these things were there for weeks without a problem. And not one of the other (I believe nine) cities had a problem - not even New York. Come on. Get a life, and admit that you totally freaked out over a few cleverly-positioned Lite Brites.
THIS is what we ought to concern ourselves with? Come on, you want to talk about the cost of this "hoax"? What about the tax payer money that will be wasted spent prosecuting an artist who was paid to do a job that posed absolutely no threat to anyone? Maybe the terrorists have started taking art classes. Maybe they're using their newly developed creative gifts to design more asthetically pleasing IEDs. Give me a fucking break.
