> Photos: Chicago's Historic Irish Pubs

One of the things that makes Emmit’s Irish Pub, 485 N. Milwaukee Ave., quintessentially Irish – it’s owned and operated by two Chicago area firemen. What makes it historic is the colorful background that includes notorious gangster lore and modern-day movie makers.

The firefighters in question are Ron Halvorsen and Kevin Doherty, who are so Chicago they identify themselves by the Catholic Church they attend as kids.

“I was from St. Ed’s, he was from St. Pascal’s, and we both attended St. Patrick’s High School,” Doherty said.

The two opened the spot, which had sat vacant for eight years, in 1996.
